Built-up roofing is exactly what it sounds like: alternating layers of asphalt (bitumen) and reinforcing felts, built up ply by ply into a thick, monolithic waterproof mat, finished with a mineral cap sheet or gravel surfacing that shields the asphalt from UV. Where a single-ply membrane puts all its trust in one sheet, a BUR system has built-in redundancy — a puncture or blister in the top ply still leaves multiple waterproof layers underneath. That's why hospitals, schools, and older commercial buildings across Miami-Dade and Broward have run on BUR for decades.
BUR earns its keep on roofs that get used: mechanical equipment, foot traffic from AC techs, decks and walkways. It's heavy, it takes abuse, and it patches economically — a repair crew can restore a damaged section without replacing the field.
